Nesting

Nesting describes the strategy for optimizing space for multiple parts within the build space of a 3D printer. The aim of nesting is to use the available area or volume in the build space as efficiently as possible in order to maximize the number of parts that can be produced in a single print run. This leads to increased productivity and reduced material waste through improved space utilization.

In nesting, the individual parts are arranged by special software so that they overlap or touch each other as little as possible, but are still arranged in a space-saving manner. The challenge is to find the best configuration that makes optimum use of the installation space while maintaining the necessary distances to ensure perfect print quality and avoid possible deformations or distortions. The software also takes into account specific requirements and restrictions, such as the alignment of the parts, support structures and post-processing.

Efficient nesting is particularly important in additive manufacturing, as it contributes directly to reducing production costs and shortens delivery times. In industrial applications, this technique is used to increase throughput and reduce total cost of ownership.
