Unlimited possibilities – PROTIQ 3D printing service in the United States

“If you can imagine it, you can do it,” enthuses Bruce Desmond, Manager of Corporate Technology at Phoenix Contact in the United States, about the sheer limitlessness of the possibilities for additive manufacturing. We’re proud to go into production with a laser sintering plant for PROTIQ in the US now as well, bringing us closer to our customers abroad.

For our American colleagues, the field is nothing new: The Mechanical Lab of Phoenix Contact in Middletown, Pennsylvania started focusing on 3D printing for internal prototyping as early as 2011. While the engineers worked with an FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printer up till now, a professional SLS system is now ready to start producing on an industrial scale. This makes it possible to manufacture significantly more complex and delicate plastic components than those resulting from the FDM process. What’s more, it facilitates cost-efficient production of higher quantities of units, meaning that components can also be manufactured in series.

Our colleague Daniel Koprowski traveled all the way from Harrisburg just to take a closer look at the range of application possibilities of selective laser sintering. When he returned to the States, he brought back with him crucial expertise from his visit to PROTIQ in Germany. The three-person team, headed by Bruce Desmond, now sees its mission as applying the newly acquired knowledge while gaining more experience. There should be plenty of opportunities to do that: The first customer contracts have already been successfully processed.
